The S Badge is a recognition granted by the Secretariat of Tourism (SECTUR) to tourism companies operating in Mexico for implementing good sustainable practices, in accordance with global sustainability criteria.
This recognition, created in 2012, aims to strengthen the performance of companies through a diagnostic tool and a measurement system that covers energy consumption, water, waste management and carbon footprint.
The S Badge supports the certifications issued by EarthCheck and Preferred by Nature, two leading international organizations in the promotion of sustainable practices, aligned with the global sustainability criteria promoted by the World Tourism Organization and the Global Council for Sustainable Tourism (GSTC).
These collaborations ensure that certified tourism companies not only meet national standards, but are also aligned with the best practices worldwide, increasing their competitiveness in a global market.
SECTUR, in collaboration with EarthCheck, has developed an accessible and efficient online tool, designed to make it easier for tourism companies, from small hostels to luxury hotels, to implement sustainable practices that not only improve their environmental performance, but also generate added value for their customers and communities.
Since 2014, a collaboration agreement with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) and the Federal Attorney's Office for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) has made it possible to recognize with the S Badge those companies that hold a Current Certificate in Environmental Tourism Quality, reinforcing their commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.
To obtain the S Badge, tourism companies in Mexico must be legally constituted, have at least two years of operations and belong to one of the following branches: hotels, restaurants, airports, convention centers, golf courses, tourist transports, among others.
The process to obtain this badge usually takes between 6 and 8 months, depending on the degree of development of the company:
Yes, the S Badge is valid for one year and must be renewed one month before its expiration date.
