Description of the project

The Costa Verde National Hospital is a newly built private hospital, located in Costa Verde, Panama City, designed as highly complex health equipment aimed at comprehensive patient care. The project consists of 10 levels above ground and 2 levels below ground, and an approximate capacity of 200 beds, integrating general and specialized hospitalization areas, ICU, operating rooms, diagnostics, consultations, therapy, administrative areas and complementary services.

Since its inception, the project incorporates criteria of operational efficiency and sustainability, aligning hospital infrastructure with international environmental performance standards. The building is located registered in EDGE certification in the Post-Construction phase, validating that the design and construction strategies were effectively implemented on site

What makes this project innovative?

The main innovation of the Costa Verde National Hospital lies in integrating a highly resource-demanding hospital program with a comprehensive certified sustainability strategy, something rare in large scale health buildings in the region.

The project stands out for:

• Optimize energy, water and material performance simultaneously, exceeding EDGE's minimum thresholds in all three categories.
• Incorporate efficient air conditioning systems, lighting control, optimized thermal envelope and on-site renewable energy, maintaining the strict comfort, hygiene and operational continuity requirements typical of a hospital.
• Demonstrate that sustainability is technically and economically feasible in healthcare infrastructure, with a cost increase of less than 1% and a return period of approximately 6.2 years.

Impact and strategies applied in the project

The project meets and exceeds EDGE standards with the following global results

• Energy savings: 30.23%, equivalent to ≈ 392 MWh/year, through:
  • Efficient envelope (walls and roofs with better U values, high-performance glass and solar control).
  • Efficient HVAC systems (high-efficiency chillers, variable speed drives, ventilation control).
  • High-efficiency LED lighting and automatic controls.
  • Photovoltaic energy in situ, covering part of the annual consumption.
• Water savings: 31.63%, achieving ∼8,518 m³/year, through:
  • Energy-efficient faucets, showers, toilets and urinals.
  • Efficient irrigation systems.
• Reduction of incorporated carbon in materials: 27.00%, through:
  • Optimized selection of structural systems and enclosures.
  • Use of materials with a lower carbon footprint in walls, slabs, roofs and carpentry.
  • Improved thermal performance without significantly increasing the environmental impact of materials.

Together, these strategies generate an annual reduction of ∼120 operational tCO₂ and ∼1,586 tCO₂ of incorporated carbon, positively impacting more than 35,000 people per year who use the building.
