Glazing in sustainable architecture

In energy terms, windows and the carpentry that closes the gaps in the building envelope are critical points, since they can be important thermal bridges. The quality of external enclosures, especially those with high-quality insulating glass, is essential to optimize the thermal insulation of the structure.

Nowadays, investment in exterior walls with insulating glass is often underestimated compared to aesthetic aspects of construction. This lack of attention is especially relevant in the commercialization of buildings, where the opportunity to add value by improving energy efficiency and habitability through efficient glazed enclosures is neglected.

It should be noted that between 25% and 30% of heating or air conditioning needs in homes are related to losses due to poor external enclosure.

In sustainable buildings, it is crucial to consider efficient glazed enclosures, such as sliding or folding windows, profileless glass curtains and double glazed systems. Not only do these solutions provide better thermal insulation, but they also take advantage of natural lighting, reducing the need for artificial lighting and improving the building's overall energy efficiency. In short, the conscious choice of glazed enclosures contributes significantly to the construction of more sustainable and energy efficient buildings.

How to Choose Window Glazing

  1. Surface Consideration: The larger window area has a more significant impact on the gains in the U of the glass than the gains in the U of the frame.
  2. Priority in Insulating Glass: It is preferable to own and purchase quality insulating glass rather than spending more money on frames.
  3. Tips for Insulating Glass Units (North Orientations): Look for reduced U (W/m2K) values to improve thermal performance.
  4. Thermal Transmittance and Light Transmission: Ideal glazing allows for the lowest thermal transmittance and maximum light transmission.
  5. Types of Glazing:
    • Simple glazing
    • Double glazing
    • High Performance Double Glazing
    • High Performance Triple Glazing
  6. Direct Solar Radiation (South, Southeast, Southwest, East and West Orientations): Low solar factor glasses are effective in reducing the heat provided by solar radiation.
  7. Warm Climates or Summer Conditions: It is advisable to install glazing with reinforced solar factor, maintaining low U values for optimal performance.
