What you need to know about EDGE v3 Certification

EDGE Green Building Certification System

The EDGE green building certification system comes from the English Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies and was created by the IFC - a member of the World Bank. Originally, it was designed to promote sustainable development in emerging markets and was only available in certain countries. With this update, EDGE version 3 is available in all countries. In addition, more strategies are incorporated into the tool used for building evaluation “EDGE App”, such as LED lighting, green roofs and different renewable energy systems.

The incentives are commercial and financial, plus the results, environmental. EDGE helps mitigate climate change by encouraging resource-efficient development.

What are the changes in this new version?

  1. Data: The baselines were updated for all countries to reflect the latest regulatory changes worldwide and were changed from ASHRAE 90.1 2007 to ASHRAE 90.1 2016.

  2. Geographic: The IFC has been aggregating data for more and more countries and cities.

  3. Functionality: New features include changing the way in which residential projects with multiple types of units and mixed-use projects are evaluated in the application, also implementing new calculators and the ability to switch between typologies without losing the data entered.

  4. Sustainable Strategies: With this update, new passive, active and renewable strategies are added to the standard.

In addition, EDGE has been expanded to include the full stage of a building's life cycle, allowing existing buildings and major renovations to be certified in addition to new construction.

EDGE Certification: The Fastest Way to Build an Efficient Building

EDGE certification is one of the fastest and most effective ways to create efficient buildings, reduce energy, water, and material consumption, and increase property resale value. Developed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank Group, EDGE helps real estate projects lower their environmental impact, reduce operating costs, and support decarbonization efforts. With a streamlined and measurable process, EDGE has become a strategic certification for developers and investors seeking sustainability, profitability, and market differentiation.
