EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) is a certification system developed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to promote efficient construction in emerging markets.
Its primary objective is to demonstrate, through quantifiable metrics, that a project can significantly reduce its resource consumption.
To obtain EDGE certification, a project must achieve a minimum of 20% savings in energy, water, and embodied energy in materials, compared to a conventional baseline building.
This methodology makes EDGE particularly attractive to developers looking to integrate sustainability from the design phase while simultaneously demonstrating concrete results.
The growth of EDGE in Peru is not limited to a single type of project. One of the main characteristics of the Peruvian market is precisely the diversity and scale of the buildings that are incorporating this standard.
From residential projects to major infrastructure, certification has become a tool for measuring and validating efficiency strategies.

The expansion of the Jorge Chávez International Airport represents one of the most important infrastructure projects in Peru in recent years.
The project incorporates a new passenger terminal, a second runway, a new control tower, aprons, access roads, and the Airport City concept.
Within this infrastructure, sustainability is also part of the design: LED lighting systems, optimized climate control, lower-consumption equipment, and solutions for more efficient water management were incorporated.
Its EDGE certification proves that efficiency standards can be applied even to large-scale infrastructure projects.
Another iconic project is Real Plaza Puruchuco, a shopping center located in Ate, Lima.
With over 233,000 m² of built area, the project obtained Final EDGE certification and became a benchmark for demonstrating that sustainability can also be integrated into large-scale commercial developments.
The project incorporates energy, water, and material efficiency strategies, as well as passive solutions such as natural ventilation and solar control.
In fact, EDGE recognizes Real Plaza Puruchuco as the largest EDGE-certified shopping center in the world.
The evolution of certification can also be seen in projects seeking higher levels of efficiency.
The new Technology Center of SENATI in Independencia obtained EDGE Advancedcertification, becoming the first educational project in Peru to reach this level.
The project achieved estimated savings of 47% in energy, 40% in water, and 45.6% in embodied energy in materials, far exceeding EDGE's minimum requirements.
Projects like this demonstrate that certification is not just about meeting a standard, but can also become a tool to push a building's performance much further.
Housing also plays an important role in the expansion of EDGE in Peru.
Savia, a residential project located in Pueblo Libre, has over 21,000 m² of built area and obtained EDGE certification.
