EDGE is a certification system for sustainable buildings that focuses on making buildings more efficient in the use of their resources, with a quantitative approach to sustainability.
Since 2014, buildings have been certified with EDGE in more than 100 countries around the world, with a total of more than 78 million square meters of certified green space.
To comply with the EDGE standard, at least 20% energy savings, 20% savings in water and 20% less energy incorporated in materials must be achieved.
At Rainbow Children's Hospital in Bengaluru, natural lighting and ventilation have been maximized, offering patients and medical staff a comfortable and bright environment.
To achieve energy savings of 27%, a reduced ratio of window to wall, glass with low emissivity coating, energy efficient air conditioning with a water-cooled cooler, energy efficient lighting and solar hot water collectors have been taken into account.
To achieve water savings of 33%, low-flow showerheads and faucets, double-flush toilets, water-efficient urinals and a wastewater treatment and recycling system have been implemented, which helps to reduce the waste of water resources while reducing the amount of utility bills.
El 48% of the building's hot water demand is supplied by solar hot water collectors on site. With regard to the wastewater treatment and recycling system, this makes it possible to conserve all non-drinkable water to be used in gardening, toilets and urinals.
To achieve a 26% less energy incorporated into the materials, solid and dense concrete blocks have been used for internal and external walls.
The application of these sustainable construction strategies has allowed the hospital to save almost 7,000 dollars in operating costs each month. Due to the success achieved in this experience, management has incorporated sustainable designs into its other projects.
The headquarters of the ProCredit bank in Bulgaria is the first building of the ProCredit Group to achieve certification EDGE Zero Carbon. The EDGE Zero Carbon certificate is awarded to projects that have offset 100% of their operational emissions and that have achieved at least 40% energy savings on site.
To achieve energy savings of 50%, the window-to-wall ratio was reduced, the roof and external walls were insulated, glass with higher thermal performance was used, an efficient air conditioning system was implemented, as well as a photovoltaic solar energy system. Also, LED lighting and occupancy sensors were used in internal spaces. The remaining CO2 emissions will be offset through the production of biogas from the local wastewater treatment plant.
To achieve water savings of 46%, double-flush toilets, low-flow faucets have been implemented in bathrooms and kitchens.
To achieve a 94% less energy incorporated into the materials, existing floors, ceilings, walls and window frames were reused.
Achieving EDGE's Zero Carbon certificate at its headquarters in Sofia is an important step for ProCredit Bank in its quest to reduce its carbon footprint. All banks in the ProCredit group have adopted environmental protection as part of their social responsibility policy. In this way, ProCredit is committed to reducing the impact of its credit operations and motivating its clients to make environmentally responsible investments.

EDGE certification is one of the fastest and most effective ways to create efficient buildings, reduce energy, water, and material consumption, and increase property resale value. Developed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank Group, EDGE helps real estate projects lower their environmental impact, reduce operating costs, and support decarbonization efforts. With a streamlined and measurable process, EDGE has become a strategic certification for developers and investors seeking sustainability, profitability, and market differentiation.
Sustainable certifications in Mexico are gaining prominence as a key tool for companies and projects that seek to demonstrate their environmental, social and governance commitment. They are no longer limited to construction alone, but encompass complete processes, operations, products and business models.
