
An airport is, at once, the building most visited by strangers in a city and the workplace of thousands of people operating rotating shifts around the clock — air traffic control, security, airlines, cleaning staff, and retail. Since the pandemic, passengers consciously associate a terminal's air quality with their own health, and several international airports, such as Vancouver's and Pittsburgh's, have already earned WELL or WELL Health-Safety certifications to answer that expectation verifiably, not just with a visible cleaning protocol. For the staff working there, the challenge is different but equally real: night shifts under constant artificial light disrupt circadian rhythms, and proximity to runways and fuel areas exposes workers to pollutants rarely monitored with the same rigor as in a corporate office. WELL certifies both realities at once — the passenger experience and the airport worker's health — with real performance testing in the areas where they overlap.
Diagnosis by operational zone: we separately assess passenger areas, administrative work areas, and runway and maintenance operational areas, each with distinct exposures and requirements under WELL v2.
Concept-based strategy: we prioritize Air, Light, and Mind for passenger areas and office staff, and specific pollutant exposure protocols for runway and maintenance personnel.
On-site performance verification: we coordinate the physical air and water quality tests an IWBI-accredited performance testing agent carries out in terminals, administrative offices, and operational areas before certification.
GBCI certification and three-year recertification: we manage seal issuance and the three-year recertification cycle, relevant for infrastructure that operates continuously and where performance must be sustained, not just achieved once.
IWBI's fees are calculated by built-area range, plus the cost of on-site performance verification — physical air and water quality tests — exclusive to WELL. In airport infrastructure, the project's scope (full terminal, passenger areas, administrative offices) significantly determines total cost, so Leaf recommends defining scope during the diagnosis stage. The full process takes 14 to 22 months from registration, longer than other building types due to the operational complexity of coordinating performance testing in a facility that operates 24/7, and requires recertification every three years.

International airports such as Vancouver's and Pittsburgh's have already earned WELL or WELL Health-Safety Rating certifications, a faster pathway focused on operational health and safety protocols, which can be complemented with full WELL certification for specific terminal areas.

It can apply to the full terminal or to specific areas such as waiting zones, administrative offices, or retail areas, depending on the scope the airport operator defines. Runway operational areas with particular exposures are assessed with adapted protocols within the same process.

WELL requires circadian lighting strategies — light that shifts in intensity and color temperature according to the time of day — designed to reduce the impact of rotating night shifts on the biological rhythm of air traffic control, security, and operations staff.
