Renewable energy in Latin America

If we want to solve the climate problem, we must start at the base: energy. A large amount of the gases that trap heat from the Sun and contribute to the greenhouse effect on our planet are generated through energy production. This production is carried out by burning fossil fuels for the purpose of generating electricity and heat.

Among the most important fossil fuels, such as coal, petroleum and gas, are largely responsible for global climate change. These fuels represent more than 75% of all global greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 90% of carbon dioxide emissions.

The scientific evidence is clear in this regard: if we want to avoid the most negative impacts of climate change, it is imperative to reduce emissions by half by the year 2030 and achieve emission neutrality by the year 2050.

The importance of renewable energy

The solution lies in the same sources of Clean energy. Hay 5 reasons why we must accelerate the process of transition to renewable energy:

  • They are all around us
  • They are cheaper
  • They are healthier
  • They create new jobs
  • They are reasonable in economic terms

Type of renewable energy and average cost

According to Ember's global electricity report made in 2022, these are the data. There are more types of renewable energy, here are a few.

Viento

It represents 6.6% of global energy generation and the cost is 38 USD/MWh.

Geothermal

Less than 1% of global energy generation and the cost is 75 USD/MWh.

Solar

It represents 3.7% of global energy generation and the cost is 36 USD/MWh.

Hydric

It represents 15.3% of global energy generation and the cost is 64 USD/MWh.

Biomass

It represents 2.3% of global energy generation and the cost is 114 USD/MWh.

Renewable energy potential in the region

According to the newspaper El País, renewable energy in Latin America may increase by more than 460% by 2030. This is because there are projects on the table that can generate up to 319 gigawatts of wind and solar energy.

Also in Peru, according to Osinergmin, there are 20 regions where electricity is produced with renewable sources.
